So you want to grow mushrooms
Everything you need to know before you buy, in one place. What you can grow, where to get your cultures, and exactly what happens from the day you inject to the day you harvest. By the end you won't have a question left.

What mushrooms can I grow with this?
The kit doesn't care what you want to grow. It's a clean, sterile home for mycelium, and the mycelium does the work. What decides the mushroom is the culture you put in, not the kit. Gourmet or medicinal, the choice is yours.
The same kit that grows one thing this month grows something completely different the next. You pick the culture. I give you the place to grow it. Learn the method once and the whole catalogue opens up to you.
Where do I get the cultures?
Two routes, depending on what you're growing. These are independent vendors, nothing to do with Hypha, picked because the community rates them.
Gourmet Liquid Cultures
Live mycelium in a syringe. Inject it straight into your kit and you're away. This is what I'd grab as a beginner, it gets going faster than spores and there's no guesswork.
- Liquid MushroomsVisit
Psilocybin Spores
For microscopy and identification purposes. Spore possession is legal in many regions for research; cultivation typically is not.
Hypha does not sell, supply, or facilitate the sale of psilocybin spores. Vendors listed independently. Cultivation of psilocybin mushrooms is illegal in most jurisdictions.
Whichever route you take, search the exact species and strain you want, read the seller's recent reviews, and go with someone people actually rate. A clean culture is the difference between an easy grow and a frustrating one.
How does it actually work?
Start to finish, with real timings and what to look for at each stage. It's less work than keeping a houseplant alive.
Inject
Day 0
Everything that matters happens in the first ten minutes, so slow down and stay clean. Wipe your hands and the table with alcohol. Shake the culture, run a flame over the needle until it glows, let it cool for a few seconds, then inject through the port. Reseal, write the date and species on the bag, and leave it somewhere warm and dark. That's the hard part done, and it wasn't hard.
First signs of life
Days 3–7
Within a few days you'll spot white fuzz creeping out from where you injected. That's the mycelium, the living organism, eating its way through the substrate. White and fluffy, or white and ropey, is exactly right.
Green, blue-green, grey or black patches, or anything wet and slimy that smells sour, mean contamination. It's rare when you've worked clean. If it shows up, message me and you're covered by the guarantee.
Fully colonised
Week 2–4
The white keeps marching until the whole bag is solid, edge to edge, with no bare gaps. Don't rush it. Once it's fully white, give it a few more days to firm up before you do anything.
Open it up
The switch
Now you flip it from growing roots to growing mushrooms. Take a knife, sterilise with alcohol wipes and cut a slit across the bottom of the filter patch. This will introduce airflow, removing CO2 from the bag and signalling its time to start growing some fungi.
Pinning
Days 5–10
Tiny mushrooms appear. We call them pins, and they start as little white pinheads before shooting up fast. This is the bit that gets everyone hooked. Keep the humidity up and leave them alone.
They fill out
+5–7 days
From pin to full mushroom is quick, often under a week. Near the end they can nearly double overnight, so have a look morning and night.
Harvest
~Week 6–8
Pick just before the veil breaks. Twist and pull the whole cluster, or snip it at the base. Leave it too long and they drop spores everywhere and go past their best. Counting from the day you injected, a first harvest usually lands around six to eight weeks in.
Second flush
Then againYou're not finished. Rehydrate it the way the instructions show, wait a week or two, and most species give you a second harvest, often a third, off the same bag. Each flush comes in a bit smaller than the last. When it finally gives up, the spent block goes on the compost or out in the garden, where it'll sometimes throw one more crop for free.

Human experience has shifted from production to consumption. We've lost touch with what it means to make the things we use. We take more than we give. Break more than we fix. Eat more than we grow. So we started growing our own. Now you can too.

The last few things
Do I need a sterile lab or special gear?+
No. Clean hands, a wiped-down table and the kit. That's the whole setup.
How long until I'm actually eating them?+
Roughly six to eight weeks from injection to your first harvest, depending on the species.
Is it hard?+
No. If you can follow a recipe and keep things tidy for ten minutes, you'll manage this fine.
What if it gets contaminated?+
It's rare when you follow the steps. If it happens, message me and we'll sort it, and you're covered by the guarantee either way.
Can I really grow any mushroom?+
Any gourmet or medicinal species you can buy a culture for, yes. The kit stays the same, the culture changes.
Do I have to buy the culture separately?+
Yes, and that's on purpose. It's what lets one kit grow anything. The vendors I trust are linked above, so it's a two-minute job.

You've seen how it works. Grab a kit, pick a culture, and you'll be harvesting in weeks. If you don't, your money back. The risk's on me.
